Leadership Guru: Michael Burwell
Michael Burwell was recently given the position of Chief Financial Officer at Willis Towers Watson. The company provides services in financial advising, broking and solutions; its goal is to turn people’s risk into growth. Willis Towers Watson is a global company with over 40,000 employees who serve in more than 140 countries around the world.
Willis Towers Watson was proud to be able to bring Michael Burwell onto their leadership team for a number of reasons, but perhaps most importantly because of his experience in management, leading and, effectively getting results. Additionally, Burwell he has a wide range of expertise in finance, transactions, and transformation. The vast knowledge and skills of Burwell will help Willis Tower Watson meet their full potential.
To help give Michael Burwell the experience he needed for his new position, he worked for 31 years at Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC). While working at PwC he served 11 years in the assurance department. Later, in 1997, he became a partner and started the transaction services practice located in Detroit. Michael Burwell saw a lot of success in Detroit and was asked to be the Transaction Services Leader for the company’s central region, which served the entire United States. Following these distinguished moments, in 2007, he became the Chief Financial Officer and in 2008 the Chief Operating Officer. He also served as Head of Global Transformation.
Michael Burwell believes that one reason he has been successful is because of his ability to be a good listener and that it is a critical step in networking and getting to know a person. He also believes that in order to be successful you have to have a positive attitude. Burwell is an avid user of various technologies that help him stay productive and on task. He is often sharing apps that he regularly uses and loves with other people in hopes that it will help them meet their full productivity potential. For example, he loves Flip Board because it is continually bringing him real time content that he can look over and read.
Michael Burwell earned his bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University in Business Administration. He is also a certified public accountant (CPA).
