It’s fair to say that Jay-Z is one of the best hip-hop artists of all time. As a solo artist, he has more number one albums than anyone else in music history. True hip-hop fans know that The Jigga Man will continue to make an effort to raise the bar in the industry.
Jay-Z’s new album, 4:44, is the legend’s 13th studio album. To be honest, some were shocked that he released this album at this time. With the birth of newborn twins, one would imagine that his personal life would not give him enough time to create and promote a new album. Jay continues to prove that he should never be underestimated.
The 4:44 album made a big splash during its first week on the market. It secured the number one spot on the Billboard 200. This hot new album managed to move 262,000 units. This is extremely impressive when you consider the fact that Jay has been in the business for over 25 years. It’s very hard for hip hop artists to stay relevant for a long period of time. For example, the chances of L.L. Cool J. releasing another album are extremely slim.
With Tidal and promotional giveaways at his disposal, it’s fair to say that 4:44 will continue to do well in the upcoming months. The numbers show that 4:44 is the fourth best début album of the year. Kendrick Lamar’s album (DAMN) reigns supreme at the moment.
Jay-Z has emerged as a talented rap artist and music mogul. After listening to 4:44, one must admit that he hasn’t lost his touch. This new album shows that Jay can smash bars and flow on any beat with ease. Will he pull another ace out of his sleeve soon?
It is easy for anyone to say that Lil Wayne and T-Pain belong in the family of hip-hop royalty. Both of these stage musicians are responsible for taking hip-hop to another level. In the past, the stars expressed interest in working together on a mega project. Would a Weezy and T-Pain album tear up the charts? Fortunately for hip-hop fans, the two musical legends will release a collaborative album titled “T-Wayne”.
Lil Wayne told a MTV News reporter he felt they could create an awesome album for their die-hard fans. We noticed the two sharing incredible energy when they did “Got Money” and “Can’t Believe It”. There’s an old saying, “Better late than never.” Years have gone by, but Weezy and T-Pain will now fulfill their promise to the hip-hop world.
T-Pain released the album’s artwork on his Twitter account. At first, it seemed like a practical joke. Weezy confirmed the two will release a joint-album in the near future. Fans started to go crazy on their Twitter and Facebook accounts. T-Pain stated he was tired of seeing the lost files from 2009 sitting on his hard drive.
The collaboration between Weezy and T-Pain worked in the past. There is no reason why it will not work now. Hip-hop needs help from two of its most recognized artists. With eight vintage tracks on the way, hip-hop fans are looking forward to getting their hands on this wonderful project.
T-Pain has a solid reputation for creating and producing hot tracks. Of course, we all know that Lil Wayne is one of the best rappers from his era. To be honest, it seems like Lil Wayne hasn’t lost a step. A hot producer and beat creator teaming up with a dope M.C. normally leads to fireworks!
With rap music growing more popular every day — and getting better at the same time — an increase in hot album reviews that are fun to read is totally warranted. Billboard recently let out a list of the best albums released so far in the first quarter of 2017. Some of the artists include Migos, Drake, and Future, three ever-popular staples of the rap industry.
Rap album reviews like those Billboard writers released are important for listeners to consume prior to purchasing them. Sometimes, samples of songs off a new album are just not the same. We can’t say any of this about Drake’s ‘More Life’, which had absolutely zero duds on the album. The artists taken on this record include 2 Chains and Young Thug, including a full line of other popular rap artists.
Future’s recent release of HNDRXX, of which you can find another write up of here, is another staple of popular strain of rap music that blare autotune. Future has another album coming up soon, something that new true rap head is forgetting about anytime soon.
Khalid’s release of ‘American Teen’ is outstanding breezy to listen to. Khalid actually came out of nowhere this year to take the rap game by storm. ‘Location’, one of Khalid’s top songs of his short career so far, has landed this album on the map for good reason.
Migos, just like Future, is expected to put out a brand new album later this year that is expected to fly off the shelves just as fast as ‘Culture’ did. There were many hot features on this album, including Young Thug and all-star caliber rappers like him.
Take full advantage of the 2017 year of rap music as it prepares to be decorated as one of the richest rap years in recent history.
Snoop Dogg, Ty Dolla Sign and Migos are three of the rap artists that will perform at the Hard Summer Music Festival in August 2017. Other rap and R&B artists slated to perform include Skepta and Charli XCX. Mike Will Made It will also perform in a triumphant debut festival appearance. I believe this upcoming festival will probably be quite interesting and entertaining. Although some of the rap artists announced for this show will likely disappoint, most of these artists will probably perform in ways that are exciting and amazing. Hip-hop legends Mobb Deep will perform, which will probably make fans of old-school hip-hop fans incredibly gratified. Although the Hard Summer Musical Festival isn’t as prominent as a number of other summer festivals, there’s no question that this festival has earned its place of prominence in the hip-hop music scene. Notably, this festival brings together hip-hop artists with electronic artists and DJs.
Since the event started in 2007, Hard Summer Music Festival has impressed a wide variety of music critics. Music journalists have reported on the upcoming festival with deep interest. I hope that the organizers of this festival will learn an important lesson from the failure of the Fyre festival, which famously failed due to a lack of preparation and logistical support. Without expert planning, I don’t think it is possible for any organization to host a successful music festival. Fortunately, it seems that the organizers of the Hard Summer Music Festival know exactly what they are doing. Although nothing is ever certain in life, I feel confident that people who attend this festival will enjoy themselves thoroughly. The inspiring list of participating artists shows that the festival’s organizers truly know what they are doing. This is an excellent time for people to attend festivals like this and thoroughly enjoy their lives.
T-Pain’s newest hit, ‘See Me Comin’, is an aggressive song that reminds listeners of the ups and downs of his career. His lyrics reminisce about his youthful times and how he has transitioned to the top of the hip hop game. Accompanied by a melodic beat and hard hitting drums, T-Pain cements his legacy as an auto tune genius with this piece. ‘See Me Comin’ has been commended by critics for a steady beat and promising longevity. When it comes to the hottest hits, T-Pain has shown again and again that he has mastered this genre of music. This song is part of his latest album, Stoicville: The Phoenix, that was teased in early 2015. In recent interviews, the artist has said that the delay was due to tour dates and VIP events. Now that he has resumed his regular schedule, the album should showcase a wide variety of styles and featured artists. On Billboard, ‘See Me Comin’ has surged to the top 100 and will likely remain there for a while. Similar singles have thrived during the spring months of music where fast paced songs are the most popular. Although T-Pain has shifted his sound over the years, the fundamental tones are still there. Listeners will be pleased to hear a raspy voice during intermissions and a smooth call during the chorus. Overall, ‘See Me Comin’ has been a tremendous success that is supported by a music video. We can visualize the difficulties of T-Pain’s life and how he works to provide a life for the future.
If you’re a fan of nineties R&B girl groups, T.L.C. is likely at the top of your list. They had a string of major hits and enjoyed a great deal of success for several years. However, since that time, they have largely stayed out of the limelight. This has left behind a huge void that the most devoted T.L.C. fans have surely felt.
That’s why when news broke that T.L.C. was hitting the studio again to record an album, so many people were chomping at the bit to get a listen to it. Although there have been delays and the record seems to have taken much longer than expected to complete, a Rolling Stone magazine article wrote that the group announced that the album will drop on June 30,2017.
This is incredible news, especially in light of the fact that the group hasn’t released new music since 2003. Even with such a large absence, fans of the group showed their loyalty by donating a whopping $430,000 dollars to a Kicklighter funding campaign to come up with the money necessary to fund a new album. The duo’s manager says that they’ve been working extra hard to try to meet the stated drop date and that this will be their last and final album.
I don’t know about you, but I plan to do whatever it takes to get this album. Whether it means standing in line at the music store, camping out overnight outside of a big box retailer or even making multiple calls to radio stations in hopes of scoring an autographed copy. T.L.C. represents everything so many people love about the nineties and this album is sure to bring back a bit of nostalgia from that time. Much love and success to the group and hopefully this album will be one for the history books.
Coming off of the breakup of hip hop group Calle 13, Residente takes his talent to a new project examining his genealogy through music, a documentary film and a book. After doing a DNA test to discover his ethnic origins, the rapper-producer decided to focus his first solo album on a personal story rather than simply make an attempt at further hit songs.
Residente’s DNA shows that his genetic history to a number of different locations around the world. Besides his native Puerto Rico, he can trace ancestry to Armenia, China, Ghana and more, making his exploration of his origins a veritable trip around the world. Each track on his new record is essentially a search for these divergent elements and crafted into a concrete piece of musicianship.
The self-titled album explores the conceptual details of his journey, while the documentary explores this investigation. Fusion Media Group, a subsidiary of Univision commissioned a book to further the interest in Residente’s story. He tapped a total of 10 different ethnic groups and nationalities to present the culture with his personal organic sounds rather than the digital production of most modern hip hop.
Many different artists lend their musical talents to the album. SoKo, a French indie-pop singer of Russian and Polish descent sings on one of the love songs, bringing a European aspect to the recording. Goran Bregovic delivers a brass band from the Balkans to explore a dystopian future. Bombino, a guitarist from Niger, adds African flavor and funk to a track. Most notably, however, is Residente’s addition of Lin-Manuel Miranda, performer and composer of the Broadway hit Hamilton, on the opening track. In his search, it was found that Miranda is his cousin.
Born Rene Perez Joglar, Residente was the frontman for Calle 13. The group, composed of sibling family members, is one of the most successful alternative hip hop acts in recent history. So much so, they set the record for most amount of Latin Grammy Awards ever won, with a total of 21. Their music also garnered them an additional three regular Grammy Awards.
The Roots performed with Usher on Friday night for the star-studded Stand for Rights: A Benefit for the ACLU. The fundraiser streamed live on Facebook and featured comedians and actors such as Tina Fey, Tom Hanks and Alec Baldwin as well as musical acts such as Ryan Adams and Norah Jones. Lasting for four hours, the fundraiser was considered a success, raising nearly $150,000 for the American Civil Liberties Union.
Performing the 1970 protest song “Cherrystones” by Eugene McDaniels, the Roots and Usher recalled the era when many people thought that the time for political activism had passed. Black Thought started the song by altering the lyrics to more modern ones talking about citizens being lazy under the administration. Usher took over after this and took the crowd by storm, singing the lyrics of “Cherrystones” to a roaring applause.
This latest show comes on the heels of rumors that the Roots are in the midst of recording an album with Usher. In September, Questlove, the Roots’ drummer, gave an interview with Fuse TV and stated that he had “…major musical projects that I’m working on that I can’t really talk about.”
The band has also backed up Usher in many other recent concerts. They played together at Montreal’s Global Citizen Benefit Concert in September. This was followed in October by a gig together at Austin’s Circuit of the Americas, the musical concert that closes the Formula One United State Grand Prix. In early March, they played together on the second night of Okeechobee Art and Musical Festival in Florida.
Thus far, there has been no official announcement, but since Usher is playing so much with the Roots recently and the band is currently recording, the rumors are most likely going to continue.
Both Usher and the Roots are Grammy Award winners with a plethora of album sales. They are widely considered a great combination and both are well-known for working with other artists. With the Roots skill at playing nearly any genre of music and Usher’s great voice and showmanship, the combination has been highly successful in generating press and raising money for charity.
It’s not uncommon for musical artists to be honored and given awards for their work, especially by members of the government. Rapper Big Sean can now be added to this long list.
On this past Saturday afternoon, Big Sean was awarded the key to the city of Detroit, which also happens to be his native city. A huge part of this honor happened to be because of the many contributions he made through the Sean Anderson Foundation.
When asked about the dubious honor, Big Sean simply said that he was given one of the highest honors that a person can receive, that being the key to the city. He wrote this on his Instagram account and added that the mayor had only given it to two other people before him, and they were Stevie Wonder and Berry Gordy. In fact he was also the youngest person ever to be given this honor.
Earlier this past month, Big Sean launched a program called “Mogul Prep,” which was a series of small workshops meant to teach middle and high school students who came from lower-income backgrounds. The lessons taught would be about all of the inner workings and behind the scenes subjects in relation to the business side of the music industry. The first class from Mogul Prep took place on a Saturday afternoon in Detroit not too long before Big Sean was holding a concert at Fox Theatre in the city. Other seminars would take place in other cities such as Miami, Baltimore and Atlanta.
Big Sean went on to say about the program, that the mayor honored him for his work in motivating the city through his music and messaging for the program. He added that his work with the program would be applied to the Detroit Public Schools system in the fall and would be expanding into Baltimore. He also took the time to donate $100,000 to the city of Flint for its ongoing poisoned water crisis.
Rapper J. Cole has recently been the subject of several news articles as he released his newest album, Dreamville. In a song on the album, the rapper makes pointed remarks about the ability of white artist like Justin Timberlake, Iggy Azalea, and Eminem to succeed in the historically black rap and r&b music industry. The album has received both positive and negative feedback, with many album purchasers identifying strongly with the overall message presented in the Dreamville album. The album leaked online earlier in the month, but is expected to be available for download in a matter of weeks. J. Cole has made no comments regarding the feedback his album received and the rappers and r&b artists who were mentioned in his newest album have not yet been available for comment.
Because J. Cole has amassed a large amount of accolades and praise during his short career, his commentary on the social events of the day often reach a large group of people. Almost every news outlet, including both conservative and liberal outlets, have commented on the rappers newest album and the statements he makes about society in it. The rapper has previously stated that he considers it his responsibility to comment about social issues and to encourage United States citizens to speak out about injustice. J. Cole hopes to continue to encourage insightful thought about the political and social climate through the development and release of popular music.
