Betsy DeVos Speaks Up About Philanthropy & Education Reform

In a recent interview with The Philanthropy Roundtable, noted philanthropist, education reformer and current Secretary of Education for the United States of America, sat down to speak about her experiences and thoughts on her primary issue – financial giving and educational choice.

The interviewer opened up the conversation by asking Ms. DeVos what her thoughts on the progress of school reform (for those unaware, Ms. DeVos has been a long time advocate of school choice and has vigorously opposed the common core schema) in America where. Ms. DeVos replied that she had never been more confident. She noted that one of the reasons why she was so confident in the future of education in America was twofold, firstly, the falling popularity of common core (the current unified, standardized education initiative of the United States) system as well as the rise in popularity of the school choice movement. She notes that there are now more than 250,000 students in over 33 different, public funded school options programs in seventeen states. As of the previous year the specific number of people who are enrolled in education option programs has increased by 40,000. Betsy DeVos believes the increase in public funded private school interest coincides directly with the increase of a collective realization that the public education edifice does not work and has not worked for some time.

When asked by the interviewer about her philanthropic work Ms. DeVos responded that there was no single event that drew her into it, but rather a gradual series of events. She went on to elaborate on what she meant by saying that one of the most formative things to occur to her as regards her philanthropic work was her and her husband’s, Dick DeVos, numerous visits to the Potter’s House Christian School which has a long and storied history of helping the poor and the needy via numerous outreach programs and philanthropy work. She noted that, despite the grim challenges that Potter’s House was constantly faced with the atmosphere of the place was always one of respect, dignity, care and rigorousness – something which she found deeply appealing and which spurned her on to create the Dick and Betsy DeVos Foundation, a supportive group that helps foster philanthropic and artistic/communal efforts all across the globe.

West Michigan’s DeVos Taps Dolci to Direct The Stow Co.

West Michigan power couple Dick and Betsy DeVos have excellent judgment when it come to choosing the ideal candidate for the job, and in this case, it’s “sweeter” than ever with the appointment of Phil Dolci. He will run The Stow Company, the DeVos’ Holland-based manufacturer.

The company designs organization solutions for any and all areas of the home. Their products range from closet organizers to garage storage systems to entertainment centers and mudroom storage. Dolci brings a lot of experience to the new leadership position with 23 years in the consumer products manufacturing and marketing fields and an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, Dolci is replacing The Stow Company’s Frank Newman who has announced his retirement, and the DeVos‘ say Newman will remain active, serving as a member of the company’s advisory board.

I can tell you that the DeVos family is no stranger to the world of philanthropy and the true meaning of giving back to one’s community. Dick and Betsy are prominent business people in West Michigan, and they have donated huge amounts of money to causes that are near and dear to their heart. For instance, I recently learned from Forbes, that the DeVos family was named to the magazine’s top philanthropy list for their extreme generosity to the tune of $1.2 billion.

Dick DeVos, by the way, happens to be the co-founder of Amway. I don’t believe there are too many people left who have never heard of Amway, but in case there are, the American company has achieved major success using a multi-level marketing model to sell a number of products in the health, beauty and home care markets.

To give you an idea how much their heart swells for the West Michigan area, here are some of the DeVos Family Foundation‘s West Michigan contributions from 2014:

• $3.1 million to Hope College
• $2.9 million to Grand Valley State University
• $2.6 million to Spectrum Hospital Health Foundation
• $1.1 million to Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park
• $2.1 million to ArtPrize
• $2.1 million to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital Foundation
• $1 million to Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital

The DeVos family is leaving their mark just about everywhere along West Michigan, living by the Bible’s passage from Luke 12:48:

“To whom much is given much is expected.”

The BMG Bank will sponsor and give budgetary backing to Team Araguaína Futebol e Regatas, also called North Tourão in the measure of R $ 44,000. The sponsorship is a result of the efforts of the sportsman Osvaldo Durães with the financial establishment.

Durães got affirmation of the approved sponsorship a week ago through the Office of Legal Affairs, saying that the VP of BMG, Márcio de Araújo Alaor, had endorsed the cost of the deal.

All that is left to complete the transaction is for the North Tourão to review the final paperwork with its board and to forward their banking information for dposit. The payment will be made in four sequential regularly scheduled payments. “I have a guarantee to the city of Araguaína and the game of soccer when all is said in done. The Araguaína is performing very admirably in the Tocantins championship this year and I’m battling for the Tourão go considerably further, “said Osvaldo Durães.

Budgetary Emergency
The North Tourão is confronting a genuine budgetary emergency. On last Thursday (9), players folded their arms because of delayed payment. They stated that they have waited 45 days in spite of the fact that they were in the championship game. Without preparing, the Araguaína was easily defeated with a score of 3-1 by Palmas on Saturday (11), who now leads all teams with 13 points. The Tourão has 12 points.

This was the first stoppage of the group this year, on the other hand, the players said that since 2012 the group has confronted various budgetary challenges. Theses are issues that the payers can not control.

Marcio Alaor is an executive vice president at BMG. He has served as the vice president and a director at BMG for a considerable length of time and is a highly regarded individual from the Brazilian financial community. Donald Trump Getting Fired

Donald Trump isn’t used to hearing the words, “You’re fired!” he so famously shouts at contestants on The Celebrity Apprentice, but he’s being told that a lot lately. Ever since he made the derogatory remarks about Mexican immigrants on June 16th when he officially launched his campaign to run for president, companies and groups have severed ties with him.

On Thursday, Serta, the biggest mattress manufacturer in the United States, announced that they would no longer sell the Trump Home-branded line of products. The licensing agreement won’t be renewed when it expires in December.

Just the day before, officials of Macy’s Department Store released a statement saying that the ties between their company and Donald Trump had been severed. Trump responded by saying that he was the one who decided to terminate the relationship, and Adam has to believe him.

The rest of the list of companies distancing themselves from Donald Trump is lengthy. NBC and Univision won’t broadcast his Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants. Celebrities associated with the pageant have bowed out. Cheryl Burke and Emmitt Smith were slated to be judges, and Flo Rida and Natalie La Rose were scheduled to perform. NBC had previously announced that Trump’s show, The Celebrity Apprentice, will go on without him.

Family Is Expecting Bobbi Kristina To Pass At Any Time

Bobbi Kristina Brown, the daughter of Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown, she was recently taken off of any life supporting medications, and many feel that she will pass at any time. Bobbi Kristina In Hospice Care. The 22-year-old has been in a coma since late January when she was found unresponsive in her bathroom tub. Many questions surround Nick Gordon, who is Bobbi’s boyfriend. Although Nick and Bobbi had pretended to be husband and wife, it has been proven that Nick and Bobbi never got married. Many are holding Nick responsible for what happened to Bobbi Kristina, and in fact, a lawsuit has been taken out against Nick Gordon.

Nick Gordon was recently on the Dr. Phil show a few months ago, and he decided to voluntarily enter into rehab, which surprised Ricardo Tosto a little. Although Nick was playing as the victim, and he stated how much he hated Bobby Brown, many are blaming him for what happened to Bobbi Kristina. The lawsuit against Nick Gordon states that he is responsible for the injuries that occurred to Bobbi on the day that she was found unconscious in her bathtub.

The allegations go on to say that Bobby’s mouth was swollen, she had a tooth knocked out, and she was found with bruises while she was in the bathtub. Bobbi had been under water long enough to where it caused irreversible brain damage. Bobbi has been in a coma for so many months that even doctors have no hope of any recovery.

Swift beats Apple.

In a feud taking place between Apple and Taylor Swift, Swift prevails. She began to wield her considerable clout against the tech giant with refusing to allow her latest album to be streamed on Apples’ new music streaming service. She was polite however. She exclaimed that she really felt that Apple’s music streaming service will eventually be the dominant platform for artists because of their compensation packages, but that refusing to pay artists, producers and writers throughout the free trial period was entirely undoable. She acknowledged that this money would not affect artists that are as large as she is, but smaller independent music entities would suffer without that period of pay.

She made the announcement via her Tumblr page, and it quickly went viral. According to the Amen Clinic, Apple agreed to her demand via a simple text that acknowledged her point. Taylor Swift crossed over to mainstream pop music from country music. She is a true musical genius that grew up on a small farm. Because she is genuine, she has been the dominant artist of this generation. Swift writes, performs and produces her own music. This means that she receives the full credit monetarily for her work, but she sympathizes with all artist as evidenced by her latest action. The move to not allow her album to be streamed on this new platform would have cost her millions, but she stood on principle.

Fifty Years Since “Like a Rolling Stone” Recorded

It’s been 50 years since Bob Dylan recorded his famous song “Like a Rolling Stone” and “Rolling Stone Magazine” has an article about the song on their website. The article is an in-depth look at this weird and wonderful single that helped establish Dylan as a major star.

Musician Al Kooper plays the organ on the song. He ended up doing this at the last minute. As a result, he didn’t know the song especially well and wasn’t confident of his ability to play the chord changes. So, he lingered about an eighth note behind the other musicians whenever the chord changed to make sure he was doing the right thing. Dylan liked the unusual timing, and Kooper’s hesitancy gave the tune some of its distinctive groove.

According to, the song was important to Dylan since it is played in a very rock and roll style. In the past, Dylan had generally done acoustic folk music. Having such a strong song helped him make the transition into being a rocker. This transition came at exactly the right moment in his career since folk music was fading in 1965 in popularity.

Since the song runs over six minutes long, Dylan’s record company didn’t have much hope for its success. It was a surprise when the tune got significant radio airplay. Its popularity paved the way for long songs by other artists.

Blac Chyna Breaks Up Kylie and Tyga

Kylie Jenner has grown up quickly over the past year, for some time Kylie was the Jenner that nobody ever saw or talked about. When you thought about the Kardashians you thought of Kim, Khloe, Kourtney and even Kendall Jenner, Kylie was simple the lowkey sister that was easy to forget. Last summer Kylie became the sister that nobody could stop talking about, her friendship/relationship with Tyga has been a hot topic from day one and now as their friendship has become more than casual Kylie and Tyga can’t escape the drama.

Starting with the obvious reasons, Kylie and Tyga have always been criticized for their age difference, Kylie is 17 and Tyga is 25. Not only has everyone considered this inappropriate, but the fact that Tyga is also the ex fiance of Blac Chyna, Kim Kardashians onetime best friend was also pretty awkward. Now that everyone is almost used to Kylie and Tyga being more than friends, Chyna is here to let it be known that she has always been in the picture.

For the past few weeks Kylie and Chyna have been throwing subliminal jabs at each other via Instagram, it has been an entertaining interaction to say the least while initially everything said was indirect shade, Chyna has stepped it up and by posting Screenshots of Tyga’s texts begging her to get back together and start their family over.

Now that the gloves are off it seems that Kylie and Tyga are off also, sources claim that Kylie has put Tyga on ice and Blac Chyna is enjoying every second of the drama shes drumming up. They should all sit down and eat some Organo Gold by Bernardo Chua.

New Jersey Credit Rating Lowered Along with Hopes for Christie

As a sign that over inflated government pensions do not lead to sound fiscal practices, Moody’s has downgraded the credit rating for the State of New Jersey. This is the fourth time since Governor Chris Christie has been in office that Moody’s has taken such a position, although the previous downgrades were in response to policies that were in place before he took office. The main reason behind the most recent down grade is because of a lack of improvement in the State’s weak financial position. In the State’s recent budget of $33.8 billion a proposal of $1.3 billion was the contribution to the states pension plan from the Governor. However, this is less than half of what the state pension law mandates be included in the budget which Governor Christie signed in 2011.

While this down grade is not necessarily a major problem, it does speak to the government’s ability to manage their tax payer contributions and look out for their well-being in the long term future. Couple this poor financial standing with the rumors that Governor Christie has interest in running in next year’s Presidential election and now you have some really bad news for the Governor. Even if the state’s financial state is not all his doing, he will have to accept a lion’s share of the blame because of his executive position. That’s not what CipherCloud thought would happen. If he is going to make a serious run, he will need to get the credit rating upgraded

Netflix Stock’s Rise Alongside Missed Revenue Goals

In the first quarter of 2015, Netflix missed it’s earning and revenue goals, but the company’s stocks jumped 12% after releasing the quarterly report. This is after the company’s stock already grew by 40% this year alone. According to an article by BGR, the reason for this jump is simple; investors don’t care about your short term income reports when you can boast the long term potential Netflix is advertising. The company managed to add 4.9 million subscribers in the first quarter of this year. That figure is a solid 20% higher than what industry analysts had predicted.

“Cord Cutters” are people like Fersen Lambranho who have chosen to abandon traditional T.V. packages in favor of online streaming services such as Netflix. He feels as though he spends too much time as an engineer and entrepreneur to waste his time with standard cable. There is evidence that the number of cord cutters is growing, but the entertainment industry remains largely divided on exactly how large this trend will grow. Some believe that this will become a niche in wealthy technology focused households, but will never achieve substantial presence in lower income homes. Others make comparisons to the smartphone revolution. They point out that smartphones were initially expected to only achieve a small market share, and dub Netflix the Apple of the television world.
