Try not to get too excited, but Alicia Keys and Jay Z surprised a crowd of thousands in Times Square on October 9, 2016. Now, Keys always puts on an unforgettable show with her raw talent and even rawer personality, but when Jay Z came out to sing part of his 2009 hit, “Empire State of Mind,” the crowd realized that they definitely picked the right concert and that these artists will forever remain legends in their own way.
That was probably the biggest shock of the night, specifically because what better way to spit rhymes about The Big Apple than being in, well, The Big Apple? Alas, the night was one for the books as Keys brought out a multitude of well-known artists, including John Mayer and Nas, and even covered some of the most iconic tunes of all time such as “Imagine” by John Lennon. Of course, the spiritual beauty made it a point to send a few important messages to all those who attended her show as well.
With messages that urged the importance of casting your vote this November election and to be a good person with deep-rooted beliefs in all that you do, the crowd cheered, got a little teary eyed, and realized just how powerful music and its artists can be. Though Alicia Keys believes that everybody should do as they please within reason, she has never been one to stay silent when it comes to her own beliefs directly because they do matter and explain why her fans love her for far more than her hits “Fallin’,” “No One,” and “Karma.”
Conclusively, concerts are a time for dancing, singing along, and swooning over your favorite artists. However, they are also a time to reflect on world issues and why certain artists are as popular as they are. Alicia Keys used her show as an appropriate time to connect further with her fans and to give them a few, well-deserved surprises.
