On July 10th, the VH1 Hip Hop Honors will be airing a tribute to women in rap and r and b, and people are already talking about one performance. The special, which will also honor Queen Latifah, Salt-N-Pepa, and Lil Kim, will feature a tribute to the legendary Missy Elliott headlined by Timbaland and featuring other famous artists in the industry including Pharrell and Nelly Furtado.
While the VH1 Hip Hop Honors have become a popular celebration of rap and r and b artists from years past, this show promises to up the hype from previous shows by including an all-star ensemble to celebrate all four pioneers in the genre that includes Nelly Furtado, Pharrell, and Common. This type of event is long overdue, as women are largely responsible for the development of rap and r & b, and they have been popular for as long as the genre has been around. For instance, Missy Elliott has been active since the 1990s and remains the largest name in female rap history with over 7.6 million album sales.
These four acts are certainly not the only women deserving of recognition in the rap and r & b industry, but they do deserve the attention and the accolades this special brings. With bumping performances by Naught by Nature, Da Brat, and Monica make this event a must-watch for all fans of rap and r and b.
